Silent Film, Nebraska State Hospital for Tuberculosis
Description
This excerpt from the 1926 silent film, Kearney and Its People, shows the patients, staff, and grounds of the Nebraska State Hospital for Tuberculosis. It opens with a view of the first permanent hospital building (1917), and also features the recently completed East Sun ward (1923) and the wooden pavilion (1912), notable for its long enclosed porches. Patients, nurses, doctors, and staff can be seen throughout.
The clip ends with Dr. J.A. Burford, the hospital superintendent from 1923 to 1927. Burford stands in front of the distinctive Colorado sandstone of the “Stone House” (today, the Frank Museum). The Stone House served as housing for the superintendent and dozens of other hospital staff for over six decades.
